This past weekend hurricane Earl was forecast to hit the coast of Maine - the town docks in
Rockport were pulled, the Boat Club asked members to pull their
dingys, people pulled their boats, and everyone got excited (and worried) about the possibility of a hurricane. Earl passed through early Saturday morning - not even close to a hurricane anymore, the only excitement was the four inches of much needed rain. The
remnants of Earl did leave small craft warnings, so we decided to play it safe and stick to the lake for the day.

By Sunday morning the small craft warning was gone - we decided to head out on the water.
A serious captain -

A happy crew -

After a short time out on the water we began to question the lack of a small craft warning. Not only were there huge swells, but there were incredible waves. At one point we looked over as a wave/swell combination loomed up next to the boat, almost crashing over the side and into the boat. We continued our adventure, wanting to get out to our chosen island picnic spot. However, the waves began to get bigger, the swells began to get bigger, and there was,
noticeably, no one else out on the water. After some discussion we decided it might be smart to head back. Mind you we are now about 5 miles out and about 8 miles from
Rockport Harbor. Amazingly, as the boat began to bob about a bit more crazily and the spray from the ocean began pouring into the boat, Oliver fell asleep. My search for a dry place turned up nothing on deck so I headed below.

Initially the spirits of the crew remained high -

But soon everyone was wet and some people were not the happiest of campers -

Oliver woke up once we got back in the harbor and he happily drove the dingy back to the tie-off - the little guy was totally unaware of our seafaring adventures.

Despite the weather, it was nice to get out on the water. It was also wonderful because the whole family was together - a rarity - so we were able to really have what we like to call "Forced Family Fun."
And, of course, what would a weekend be without a swim? This past weekend Davis participated in the Maine Sport Triathlon. Davis did the swim portion, his cousin Bjorn did the run and a friend of Bjorn's did the bike. Their team got first place.

Wow! Sounds like quite an adventure. Love the shot of Oliver sleeping on your belly.
